A patient recently asked Dr. Mejia about anti aging and what is the best way to remain natural looking but also working to repair and delay the aging process. There are a couple of key things he emphasizes:
Wear Your Sunblock
One of the worst offenders of aging is ultraviolet light. So the use of sunblock especially those that contain UVA and titanium oxide or zinc oxide which is the physical block. Using sunblock on a daily basis especially when outdoors can prevent the harmful rays from penetrating into your skin and damaging the collagen and elastin which causes premature aging and wrinkling. In this video Dr. Mejia talks about how to get rid of sunspots. Sunspots are slight brown spots on the surface of the skin that you can hardly feel. They are typically caused by chronic sun damage. Sunspots are not necessarily pre-cancerous to develop into a skin cancer.
They can be treated in a variety of different ways:
- Liquid nitrogen to damage the pigmentation so it slowly goes back to normal.
- Laser treatments that can help soften them.
- Bleaching creams that may help the discoloration if the sunspots are not so apparent.

Most importantly, Dr. Mejia’s number one priority is to wear your sunblock. He compiled the ABCDE’s of Melanoma so you know what to watch for.
On April 16th, the FDA announced that counterfeit Botox was sold by an unlicensed supplier who is not authorized to ship or distribute drug products in the United States. The FDA is cracking down on Aesthetic medicine more than ever. Their focus used to be pain management and oxycotin pill mills. Now the focus is on aesthetics realizing how much illegal importation is occurring.
It has been found that doctors, med spas or clinics who order Botox from Canada has been tracked back to India, China or Israel. This is a huge issue because unless a Doctor uses Botox from the only FDA approved company, Allergan, those patients have no idea what they are really getting injected with. In this video, Dr. Mejia is asked how to treat hemangioma, the little red spots on your skin. They mostly are benign and are treated with laser. As he says in the video, his number one priority is always medical issues. His philosophy is that you are beautiful just the way you are if it is something you don’t need. We offer cosmetic treatments, but only if you want it to feel better. So stay healthy & beautiful everyone!
We were honored for another year to be a part of the WPBF25 News Health and Wellness Festival in which Dr. Mejia was on stage speaking on Anti-Aging. Ashley Hess, our Physician Assistant also spoke on preventing skin cancer. Dr. Mejia took many questions from the audience ranging from acne, spider veins, hemangioma treatment, hair loss and much more.
Also, this year I was excited to be on stage with Senta Evans, our Cosmetic and Hair Coordinator to introduce Dr. Mejia and Ashley. Throughout the day, many people visited our booth to ask questions, spin the Wheel of Beauty and receive sunblock samples by our whole staff.
We have lots of video and media here on this recap, so I hope you enjoy!

Many patients come in to the office to remove skin tags. It is as simple procedure by doing a snip excision. In this demonstration Dr. Mejia performs a skin tag removal on the face, although many people have them under their arms or groin area.
Skin tags are different from moles which can be cancerous and are simply fleshy growths on the skin. They do not need to be removed, but in some cases, if a patient has many, it may cause irritation in the skin. In another post, Dr. Mejia explains the difference between skin tags and moles.
Please note that this video is for educational purposes. Please consult your dermatologist for any skin tag removal.
Dr. Ricardo Mejia will be a guest speaker once again at the WPBF25 Health and Wellness Festival at the Gardens Mall featuring Dr. Oz and his wife, Lisa Oz. His presentation is at 11:00 AM right before Dr. Oz, so make sure you arrive early to get a good view.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occuring substance that occurs in our body, skin and joints and tissues. It functions like a lubricant for our joints. In our skin, it shows as the volume that we have. That is why many creams to find the fountain of youth to lessen wrinkles contain hyaluronic acid.
In this video Dr. Mejia explains the difference between injecting hyaluronic acid and creams that contain hyaluronic acid and why those creams may not necessarily work to reduce the amount of wrinkles. Of course, if you put any cream vs not any at all, your skin will look more hydrated. Hyaluronic acid is a water absorbing molecule and when you do put it on your skin, it provides moisturization to your skin to the top layer of your skin does give you a more youthful look.
