WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING?

Microneedling is an extremely popular, minimally-invasive treatment option that can improve a wide variety of skin concerns.

Also known as collagen-induction therapy (CIT), microneedling involves creating tiny puncture wounds in the skin to induce the skin’s natural healing processes. The healing process involves essential components of strong, healthy skin, including collagen and elastin production and increased blood flow. The result is skin with improved texture and tone with less noticeable lines and blemishes. Microneedling can often be paired with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy to further jumpstart the skin’s restorative functions. This is commonly called the ‘vampire facial’.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR MICRONEEDLING?

Common areas that can be treated with microneedling include the face and neck. You might be a candidate for microneedling if you are looking for a non-surgical treatment option to improve the following:

  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Stretch marks
  • Acne scars
  • Rough texture
  • Discoloration

Many individuals also choose microneedling to maintain the results of another cosmetic procedure or to prevent common signs of aging such as line and wrinkles. Microneedling is an excellent option for most patients because its effectiveness is not dependent on skin type or tone like some other skincare procedures. It can also be used on delicate or sensitive skin which is traditionally difficult to treat with other options. It’s important to note that you should avoid microneedling if you have active acne, cysts, or infections. Also, be sure to discuss any history of abnormal scarring or keloids, as well as cold sores, during your consultation.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING TREATMENT

Before your treatment, we can supply a topical numbing cream for your comfort. During treatment with microneedling, a small pen-like tool or roller will be used. The tool contains many tiny needles, about 2mm long, and is applied all over the treated skin. As this is happening, the tiny needles create micro-puncture wounds that target the dermis to trigger the body’s natural healing process. Specialized products with active ingredients to target your unique concerns can be applied after these tiny channels are created so that your skin can more easily absorb them. The procedure process will take about an hour to complete. Before leaving your treatment session, you will be provided with at-home skincare products to optimize results and promote healing.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER MICRONEEDLING TREATMENT?

There is minimal downtime after microneedling, with most patients healing in just a few days. During recovery, you might experience some mild swelling and redness like a sunburn. After two to three days, you can resume wearing makeup but should still wear daily sunscreen and avoid overexposure to sunlight.

We usually recommend a package of three to six treatment sessions for maximum improvements. If your skin concerns are deeper or more severe, we might recommend a longer treatment plan where we can adjust our techniques for the appropriate depth. Your microneedling results will appear over the course of three to six months with regular treatments and at-home care. During this time, your skin will go through three stages of healing, which includes inflammation, tissue proliferation, and tissue remodeling. After new, stronger collagen is produced, the skin will be stronger and more lifted, with improved texture and overall appearance.

FAQs

Is microneedling safe?

Microneedling is a widely-performed procedure that has a history of safety and effectiveness. To ensure this, it’s important to select a board certified dermatologist who can tailor your treatment to your unique concerns and anatomy. This treatment is non-invasive and requires very little recovery time with effective at-home care.

Does microneedling hurt?

Some patients experience minor discomfort with microneedling which can be managed with a topical numbing cream. You may feel some slight pressure as the handpiece is administered.

How much does microneedling cost?

One of the benefits of microneedling is that it often comes at a lower cost than other skincare treatment options. During a consultation, you’ll receive a full estimate of your treatment package cost. If you want to opt for PRP treatments with your microneedling, we can also calculate the additional cost.

How does microneedling with PRP work?

Also called the ‘vampire facial’, this treatment is extremely popular with celebrities and influencers. PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is derived from your own blood sample. This sample is put into a centrifuge which separates the plasma from the other components of blood. This plasma is rich in growth factors and can be microneedled into the skin to better jumpstart your skin’s healing processes.

What should I avoid before and after treatment?

During your consultation with our experts, you should be sure to discuss any active ingredients you use in your skincare regimen. If you use retinoids, you may be asked to stop using them before and after treatment for best results. Often, it’s best to use gentle, unscented products to reduce the risk of reaction. It’s extremely important to avoid direct sunlight after treatment.

Since microneedling creates wounds in my skin, will I get an infection?

In all of its popularity, the risk of infection with microneedling is very low, especially when performed under the guidance of a board certified dermatologist. This is because microneedling benefits only the  topmost layers of the skin with extremely small wounds which close quickly. If you’re concerned about infection, our skincare specialists can provide instructions about how to keep your skin healthy after treatment.

Can I try microneedling at home?

With the rise of microneedling, many at-home devices have come with it. It’s important to remember that microneedling should always be performed by a board certified dermatologist who can ensure you’re averse to risks to your skin’s health. Additionally, there’s little evidence that at-home dermarolling is as effective as medical-grade microneedling.

Can microneedling be used for hair restoration?

Sometimes, PRP microneedling can be used for hair restoration on the scalp to jumpstart hair follicles that no longer function well. It’s often combined with ACell, an extracellular matrix, to help make better use of the growth factors in PRP.

Can microneedling make my skin absorb products better?

Yes. For a specific window of time, your skin will be better able to absorb active ingredients and serums like vitamin C or hyaluronic acid. This is because the micro-channels created during treatment allow the products to reach the deeper layers of the skin and access the cells directly rather than sitting on top of the skin.

If I had injectable treatments, can I still get microneedling?

If you’ve had injectable treatments like Botox® or dermal fillers, you should be sure to discuss it during your consultation. There’s the possibility that microneedling can disrupt the product, so our skincare specialists can recommend the right timeframe for your microneedling treatment.

Can microneedling treat stretch marks?

Microneedling has shown promise in treating stretch marks with regular treatment. It’s important to discuss your goals with a board certified dermatologist, however, since the severity of your stretch marks can require a customized treatment plan.
