The loss of midface volume is one of the hallmarks of facial aging. This occurs in varying degrees of severity and can lead to significant changes in the facial appearance. One of the most noticeable changes is the loss of cheekbone definition. Recently, volumizing fillers have been used to provide a similar ‘lift’ without surgery. The goal is to restore volume in the midface to create a natural, youthful face.
What is Juvéderm Voluma?
Voluma, made by Juvederm, is the first filler formulated with lidocaine that is FDA approved to restore age-related volume changes in the cheeks. Unlike other fillers commonly used to treat the midface, Voluma is a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler. Voluma is unique in that it helps provide an excellent lifting capacity and resists degradation, making Voluma last almost twice as long as other fillers. Studies have shown that it can last up to 2 years.
What Does Juvéderm Voluma Treat?
Juvéderm Voluma is used to treat patients with volume loss in their midface or it can be used to simply add definition to cheekbones. Juvéderm Voluma can also have a lifting effect when injected into the cheeks. This works as an added benefit for any creases or folds around the mouth while still lifting and adding volume to the cheekbones for a gorgeous facial structure.
What Should I Expect from Treatment?
To begin most dermal filler appointments, a topical numbing cream is applied for 15 to 20 minutes prior to treatment. Once it has taken effect, the treatment itself will take approximately 15 to 30 minutes to perform depending on how much is being injected. The treatments use very small needles and are virtually painless due to the numbing cream and Ricardo Mejia, MD’s gentle injection technique. After Ricardo Mejia, MD injects the Voluma, he inspects the area carefully to ensure maximum lift and volume. Patients may return to normal activities immediately after treatment.
