Psoriasis
Psoriasis can be persistent and recurring if left untreated, with mild to severe symptoms. While there is no exact cure for the condition, a dermatologist can help manage symptoms with a proper treatment plan that is unique to the patient.
What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a common skin condition that can appear differently from person to person. Psoriasis causes the skin cells to rapidly reproduce, leading to a thickening of the skin that appears as red, scaly patches. The condition often affects the elbows, knees, and scalp and causes itching and burning in the area.
What Causes Psoriasis?
Psoriasis occurs due to an overproduction of skin cells; however, the exact cause isn’t fully understood. The condition is thought to be an immune system disorder, causing an overproduction of T cells as if healing a wound. This causes a buildup of skin that can lead to thickening and scaling patches. Many individuals experience the condition since birth and may have episodes of symptoms that come and go. There are certain triggers thought to bring on and worsen the condition including:
- A strep infection
- Hepatitis
- Stress
- Skin injury
- Certain medications
- Friction from tight clothing
- Smoking
- Obesity
- Alcohol
How is Psoriasis Treated?
Ricardo Mejia, MD and his physician assistants Ashley Hess and Alli Rayner can determine if you have psoriasis by performing a physical exam. A skin biopsy can also be done to determine the exact type of psoriasis present. Treatment for psoriasis include:
- Topical solutions such as ointment or creams, often used for mild to moderate symptoms to moisturize the skin and control itching and flaking
- Light therapy to slow skin cell turnover, might include natural light or lasers
- Medication such as retinoids, methotrexate, or medication to alter the immune system used for severe symptoms
- Multiple biologics like Humira, Taltz, Enbrel, Stelara, and Tremfya.
You might also try certain at home remedies such as:
- Bath soaks with oil, oatmeal, or Epsom salts to soothe the skin
- Moisturizers
- Avoiding triggers such as infections, stress, and skin injuries
