Botox®
One of the most widely used injectable cosmetics, Botox, is a popular neuromodulator used by Ricardo Mejia, MD for the temporary treatment of fine lines and wrinkles caused by repetitive facial expressions. With Botox injections, the muscles controlling these motions will relax, leaving you looking refreshed with smoother skin.
What is Botox?
Botox is a purified protein and neuromodulator made of a substance called botulinum type A. When injected into the muscles, it will block the nerve signals that cause the repetitive movements. Botox injections are measured in units and each patient will differ on how much they need for their desired result. The main purpose of Botox is to temporarily smooth out the appearance of lines and wrinkles; however, in recent years there have been other approved uses for the injectable that are both cosmetic and medical.
What Does Botox Treat?
At Jupiter Dermatology and Hair Restoration, Botox is used to treat dynamic lines and wrinkles. This means that wrinkles caused by movement can be improved by Botox; however, static wrinkles caused by skin laxity cannot. The following are the types of wrinkles that Botox can be used to treat:
- Crow’s Feet – Crow’s feet are the small lines that form at the corners of the eyes as a result of squinting and other facial expressions.
- Forehead Lines – Horizontal forehead lines are formed from a variety of expressions such as raising eyebrows, squinting and furrowing your brow.
- Frown Lines – Frown lines or also known as “elevens” are vertical lines between the brows that occur from furrowing your brows and frowning.
- Masseters/TMJ- Patients that have a boxy or square face and have symptoms of temporal mandibular joint pain can benefit from Botox®. Not only will it help with TMJ, but it will soften the muscles and give a more oval shape to the face.
WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR BOTOX?
Candidates for Botox treatment are those in the Jupiter, Fl area who want to look younger without going under the knife. Botox is most effective when it comes to dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles, as opposed to static wrinkles, are those that are present or worsened by the natural facial expressions. Years of smiling, laughing, and frowning can weaken your skin and results in the appearance of crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead lines, all treatable with Botox. Those with severe skin allergies and those that are pregnant or breastfeeding may not be candidates for treatment with Botox.
BOTOX VS. FILLERS
Botox and fillers are both injectable, nonsurgical solutions to improving your fine lines and wrinkles. However, the two treatment work very differently to treat different types of wrinkles. While Botox works to improve dynamic wrinkles in the upper face, fillers work by instantly adding volume to static wrinkles, those that are present even when the face is relaxed. These wrinkles and folds typically occur in the lower face around the nose, mouth, and chin. Unlike Botox, fillers can also be added to the facial features like the lips and cheeks to give a subtle enhancement. There are several different types of filler formulas on the market including Juvederm®, Restylane®, Radiesse®, Sculptra®, and more. If is perfectly safe and often beneficial to combine Botox and fillers. Dr. Mejia will meet with you to determine the best course of treatment for your concerns.
HOW DOES BOTOX WORK?
Botox is a neuromodulator injectable composed of botulinum toxin. The formula works by blocking the nerve signals that tell the facial muscles to contract. When placed in wrinkle-causing facial muscles, fewer lines and wrinkles occur when forming expressions. The effects of Botox will eventually wear off, making it a great alternative to those that are not ready for a surgical commitment.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM TREATMENT?
