Office Re-Opening and Patient Screening Procedures

May 4, 2020

To Our Valued Patients and Friends,

On behalf of myself, our Physician Assistants, Alli Rayner and Ashley Syler, and the rest of the Jupiter Dermatology staff, we hope that you and your families have stayed healthy and safe during the COVID-19 quarantine. We have missed the hustle and bustle of our practice, and we are eager to return to our ‘new NORMAL.’ Today, Monday, May 4, 2020, Governor DeSantis, via executive order, gave the green light for our reopening. While this is great news, we want to ensure you that our highest priority will continue to be your safety and well-being.

In the midst of this global pandemic, we want you to know that we have been following all the recommended CDC guidelines for remaining virus-free. Additionally, to provide care for non-emergencies, we implemented Telemedicine, a remote consultation solution through the Doxy.me application. Because this solution offers an added level of care, telemedicine consultations will continue to be offered. Should you prefer to schedule a telemedicine consultation, simply click (or log onto via a web browser) the following link: Doxy.me/Jupiterderm or call our office at 561-748-0510.

Additionally, please note our office has, and will continue to exceed all regulatory guidelines for safety and sanitization. We have always adhered to the highest standards of cleanliness, and during this pandemic, we implemented even higher levels of cleaning and sanitization into our processes. To further your safety, we are also pre-screening all patients to minimize the exposure of the virus to you, and our staff. Below are the pre-screening policies and procedures implemented for all patients requesting an appointment.

Lastly, if you are in need of a post-quarantine “pick me up”, we are extending the offer of our popular Botox Frozen Friday Special to the following dates: May 4-15, and May 22 and May 29th.

We look forward to welcoming you back to our practice, and ‘getting through this, together’.
Warmest regards,

Dr. Ricardo Mejia

Your Guide To Skincare In Your 50s

Skincare is vital, no matter what age you are. Surely by the time you are in your fifties, you have a skincare routine. However, this is the time in life when aging signs become prevalent, causing you to look older than you are. To keep your skin looking as youthful as possible, it is important to implement a good skincare routine that keeps the skin moisturized, tight, and smooth. Here are some steps to taking care of your skin in your fifties.

Make Sure To Moisturize

You have properly heard it a million times throughout your life, but moisturizer is key to good skin. A moisturizer keeps the skin hydrated and helps it glow. Especially if you spend time in colder climates, moisturizer will be key to avoiding flaky, cracking skin. Even when you wash your face, utilize a moisturizing cleanser. At Jupiter Dermatology & Hair Restoration, we have a variety of skincare products, including moisturizers, to help keep your skin stay hydrated.

Use Face Serums

Unfortunately, as aging sets in, the skin stops producing hyaluronic acid and collagen. Both of these natural substances are basic structures for the skin. Hyaluronic acid helps the skin to retain moisture and stay hydrated, plus it adds volume to the skin for a plumper look. Collagen is a fundamental protein that is the primary component of connective tissues in the skin. To help restore the lost collagen and hyaluronic acid in the skin, use daily face serums made from these substances. Plus, if you look for a serum that contains an antioxidant it will fight free radicals as well. This will help your skin to look brighter and younger.

Apply a Nightly Cream

During the daytime using a face serum is great before applying moisturizer and sunblock. At night, however, go to bed wearing a nightly face cream. Make sure the face cream has important ingredients, like retinoid, as this is an anti-aging substance that will help to hide wrinkles and fine lines. As with face cleansers, the night cream should be moisturizing as well to not dry out your skin. If you have sensitive skin, this is especially important.

Face Treatments

If you want to truly rejuvenate your skin, consider getting a facial treatment with our Jupiter Dermatology team. We offer various facials, chemical peels, and injectable treatments.

Facials are recommended for regular skincare as they remove impurities and clear the pores. They can also remove age spots, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation. At Jupiter Dermatology we offer facials with microdermabrasion for comprehensive skin treatment.

Chemical peels are great for removing the damaged, aged layers of skin so that you can start with a fresh layer. We offer three types of chemical peels: the superficial peel, medium peel, and deep peel. Depending on your skin concerns, each peel will be beneficial in a different way.

Lastly, injectable treatments are minimally invasive cosmetic procedures that work to smooth out wrinkles and lines, add volume to the skin, and help plump up sagging skin. Injectable treatments range from neuromodulators like Botox to dermal fillers like Juvéderm. Our team will recommend the best type for you based on your concerns and lifestyle.

Our Skincare Picks for Keeping Your Skin in Tip Top Shape Between In-Office Treatments

Professional services at a dermatologists’ office like Jupiter Dermatology are by far the most effective way to keep your skin healthy and avoid signs of aging. However, you can’t always make it into regular dermatologist appointments, and it’s important to maintain your skin on a day-to-day basis. The best way to ensure your skin’s health at home is by investing in high-quality products. Here are the steps that our dermatologists recommend for your at-home skincare.

Cleanser

The right cleanser for you varies by your skin type and concerns. For example, those with acne should likely use a cleanser that includes ingredients like salicylic acid, while dry skin types are better suited to less harsh cleansers. Regardless of the product your dermatologist recommends, the Clarisonic Skincare Brush is an effective tool for almost everyone. This brush helps to more effectively and deeply cleanse your skin and unclog pores.

Toner

Toners are a commonly misunderstood product. A facial toner should be applied after cleanser and before moisturizing or applying serums and other treatments. Simply put, toners thoroughly cleanse the skin of any oils or impurities that may have been left behind after washing your face. They also help to balance the pH of your skin. There are a variety of toners available for various skin types and concerns. Some of our favorites include:

Serum, Retinol, and Treatments

After you apply toner, you may include additional products that are more tailored to your individual needs.

Serums, like SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum, help to rejuvenate the appearance of the skin and can be applied in both the morning and evening. Most serums have a somewhat watery, liquid texture, and can be used to improve signs of aging or create a more even, bright appearance.

Retinol is a powerful anti-aging product that should only be applied at night. If you’re new to retinol, start out by using these products only a few days a week. Some of our favorite retinol products include Retin A and SkinMedica Retinol Complex 0.5.

Moisturizer

Moisturizer is essential for morning and nighttime skincare routines. Our dermatologists recommend a range of moisturizers to suit multiple skin types. Even if you have oily or acne skin, it’s important to moisturize so that your skin remains balanced and hydrated.

Some of our favorite moisturizers include EltaMD Moisturizer and SkinMedica Ultra Sheer Moisturizer.

SPF

Daily SPF is important for reducing your chance of skin cancer and avoiding sun damage or early signs of aging. Regardless of the season, you should always apply SPF to your face, neck, and chest. Most dermatologists recommend that you wear SPF 30 or higher. Some of our favorite products include Skinceuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense and EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF.

The Dangers of Microneedling at Home

As microneedling becomes more popular, many people are turning to at-home dermal rollers and other tools for their convenience and low-cost. However, microneedling at home without a professional’s guidance and expertise is dangerous for several reasons.

In addition to being less effective, at-home microneedling can be dangerous for your health. Microneedling works because the treatment stimulates the body’s natural healing response by creating micro-injuries in the skin. This causes increased collagen production, but can also be dangerous if performed incorrectly. Here are four major reasons why microneedling is best left to the professionals.

Risk of infection

The number one concern with at-home microneedling treatments is the risk of infection. Professional dermatological and aesthetic settings, like Jupiter Dermatology, are rigorously cleaned and sterilized in ways that even the cleanest homes are not. In addition, the microneedling tools used by professionals are sterilized as well. At-home tools may be unsanitary whether from improper cleaning by the user or from being handled during their production and therefore unsanitary for first-time use. Without professional precautions and sterilization, microneedling runs the risk of causing infection by introducing bacteria into the micro-injuries created in the skin.

Risk of scarring

Many people choose microneedling to treat scarring, such as acne scars. However, microneedling can cause scars if performed incorrectly. Some people will, for example, create wounds larger than intended, or microneedle areas that are not suitable for the treatment. Such injuries always run the risk of leading to a scar.

Microneedling isn’t suitable for everyone

A dermatologist or aesthetician is uniquely trained to evaluate the skin and determine the most suitable treatment for each patient. While microneedling is suitable for most people, there are some who may have adverse reactions to the treatment. This includes some patients with rosacea, sensitive skin, or active acne. Without evaluation by an experienced professional, it’s nearly impossible to predict whether microneedling is a safe and suitable treatment for your skin type.

One-Size-Fits-All microneedling tools

Jupiter Dermatology offers several types of microneedling using different tools. Most at-home microneedling tools are dermal rollers, which may not be effective or necessarily safe for all patients. Dermal rollers create punctures at an angle, versus the perpendicular microchannels created by other pen-like tools. Additionally, professional treatments can be customized in terms of the depth of the needles and any topical treatments applied after microneedling, ensuring that the service is effective for each individual patient. At-home treatments do not benefit from this customization.

Schedule a consultation

To ensure your microneedling treatment is safe, you should always see an experienced professional. Our board certified dermatologist will determine whether microneedling is your best option for your unique skin type and concerns and develop a skincare plan. Call Jupiter Dermatology at (561) 748-0510 or fill out our online form to set up your first appointment and find out if microneedling is a suitable treatment for you.

Injectables 101: Which Should You Choose?

Aging signs are a natural part of life and getting older, but that does not mean that they’re not bothersome. You may be noticing different signs of age like wrinkles, fine lines, volume loss, or sagging skin and they may make you feel older than you are. Cosmetic treatments can help you combat these aging signs, but which is right for you? Now, more than ever, there are numerous choices to treat wrinkles, folds, lines, and more. It can be daunting to choose from. Our expert staff here at Jupiter Dermatology & Hair Restoration will help to recommend the best products for you.

Injectable Treatments at Jupiter Dermatology

To suit all your skin needs, we have a range of numerous injectable treatments with both neuromodulators and dermal fillers. A neuromodulator is an injectable treatment that relaxes wrinkles and contains botulinum toxin. Dermal fillers are injectable gels typically comprised of hyaluronic acid that aid in improving aging signs.

Botox

Botox is the most widely used neuromodulator treatment. It is from a purified form of botulinum toxin type A. It reduces wrinkles, lines, and folds by blocking the nerve signals that cause the repetitive movement of muscle which leads to these aging signs. Botox can be used to treat crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines. Results are noticeable within a week and last for 3 to 4 months on average.

Dysport

Dysport is a neuromodulator that is made from botulinum toxin. This is formulated differently than other neuromodulators like Botox. It is used to improve moderate-to-severe frown lines between the brows and across the forehead. It smooths out these lines by blocking the nerve signals that tell the muscles to contract. Patients will see some change immediately with the most dramatic results occurring after a week. The results of Dysport last on average for 3 to 4 months.

Jeuveau

Jeuveau, or Newtox, is the newest FDA-approved neuromodulator on the market. This neuromodulator reduces lines and wrinkles by blocking the signals that tell the facial muscles to contract. This injectable was specifically designed to treat frown lines but can also be used on the forehead and for crow’s feet. Jeuveau gives dramatic results that will be visible within a few days of treatment. These results last between 3 to 4 months on average.

Juvederm XC

Juvederm XC is a hyaluronic acid-based filler that is used to smooth out and plump up the skin. It is used to improve the appearance of smile lines, marionette lines, and lips. Patients will notice results immediately after their 15- to 30-minute treatment. The results will continue to improve as the hyaluronic acid settles into the body. Most patients enjoy the results from Juvederm XC for up to 1 year.

Juvederm Volbella

Juvederm Volbella is a dermal filler from the hyaluronic acid-based fillers line from Juvederm. This filler was created to enhance the lips and correct vertical lip lines. Volbella is a great choice for subtle, plump lips. The results from Volbella have been shown to last for up to 1 year.

Juvederm Vollure

Another filler from Juvederm is Vollure. It is formulated with a Vycross technology so that the results of Vollure last for up to 18 months. This injectable is FDA-approved to improve lines and wrinkles in the midface. Within a 15- to 30-minute treatment, your skin will be smooth and plump with Vollure.

Juvederm Voluma

The Juvederm Voluma filler is a great, long-lasting treatment that adds volume to the face for a more defined and contoured look. It is FDA-approved for use in the cheeks and lips to plump up the areas if they are thinning or have lost volume. Voluma results can last for up to 2 years with optimal treatment.

Kybella

Kybella is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment to eliminate fat. This injectable uses an active ingredient called deoxycholic acid which breaks down and destroys fat cells. Kybella is used to treat excess fat under the chin that causes the look of a double chin. Most patients need 3-6 treatment sessions for optimal results. The fat cells will flush out over time which makes the results long-lasting, especially for patients who maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Radiesse

Radiesse is an injectable treatment that is used to correct deep facial folds and creases. The injectable consists of calcium hydroxylapatite that is suspended in gel. Hydroxylapatite is a normal substance found in the bones. Radiesse can be used for chin and cheek augmentation as well as reducing the appearance of nasolabial folds, perioral lines, scars, and aging hands. The in-office treatment takes between 15 and 30 minutes to complete. Radiesse results have been shown to last for up to 18 months in most patients.

Restylane

Restylane is a cosmetic dermal filler formulated of hyaluronic acid. Restylane is injected into the dermis to restore fullness and volume to the skin. The results from Restylane are seen immediately and last for up to 18 months. This filler can correct wrinkles, lines, and folds in the face as well as plump up areas of volume loss like in the cheeks.

Sculptra Aesthetic

The Sculptra Aesthetic is a poly-L lactic acid-based filler that provides a gradual correction of lines and wrinkles on the face. It does this by stimulating the body to produce new collagen and tissue which creates a more youthful appearance.  Sculptra can treat all parts of the face. This treatment is known as the “liquid facelift,” and patients enjoy their results for up to two years or longer.

The 4 Best Treatments for Acne Prone Skin

Many people struggle with acne-prone skin and try numerous at-home treatments with no success. Often, the best approach for acne-prone skin is professional treatment from a dermatologist. These treatments are most effective because they address the specific cause of each individual’s acne, which can vary. Here are four of the best treatments for acne-prone skin.

Using Professional Quality Skincare Products

The best place to start with your acne treatment is to have your skin evaluated by a professional. Dr. Mejia can determine the best plan for you to treat your acne by understanding the root cause of the problem.

Acne can fall into several categories, with different daily routines and regular treatments that suit them. The main categories are:

  • Whiteheads and blackheads, which are caused by dirt, oil, or dead skin cells clogging a hair follicle,
  • Pustules and papules, which are whiteheads which have become inflamed and may or may not contain pus, and
  • Cystic acne, which is the most severe form of acne and involves deep nodules that may or may not contain pus.

No matter the cause of your acne, however, there are some general tips you can follow day-to-day. You should wash your face twice a day, rinsing with lukewarm water and gently patting dry. Even if your skin is oily, you should always moisturize. Exfoliate about once a week, using a gentle method such as a Clarisonic brush.

It’s also most effective to use professional quality skincare products as part of your daily routine. Jupiter Dermatology offers the SkinMedica acne system, which includes a Purifying Foaming Wash, Purifying Toner, and Acne Treatment Lotion. The system includes salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, which both help to fight acne. Dr. Mejia will advise which products should work best to clear up your acne.

Facials with Microdermabrasion

A facial with microdermabrasion is a great treatment for acne-prone skin, because it gently exfoliate the face. During treatment, tiny crystals are sprayed onto the surface of the skin with a small, wand-like tool. This gently removes any dead skin cells from the face, which can clog pores and cause acne. Facials can be performed once a month to help maintain results and reduce acne.

Our new OxyGeneo 3-in-1 Superfacial also has a Geneo Charcoal Facial that :

  • Purifies the pores
  • Balances oily skin
  • Improves skin texture
  • Smoothes skin

Chemical Peel

Chemical peels are a service during which a dermatologist will cleanse the skin and apply a chemical solution. The active ingredients in this solution will cause the upper layer of the skin to peel away.

For acne, a superficial peel is recommended. This is the gentlest form of chemical peel and can be repeated about every two months. After this kind of chemical peel service, the skin tends to be red and sensitive, but you will not have to worry about the swelling and extended recovery period associated with deeper peels intended for anti-aging purposes.

Antibiotics

Some types of acne can be treated using antibiotics. Acne can be caused by bacteria at the surface of the skin, which antibiotics reduce. These treatments can be either topical or oral, and must be prescribed by a dermatologist.

Mild to moderate acne of the face, chest, or back can be treated with antibiotics such as tetracycline, minocycline, and doxycycline. Accutane is a specialized treatment that is reserved for more severe cases of acne for those who have had little success with other topical or oral treatments.

When it comes to your skin, it is absolutely best to start by consulting with a professional. Give us a call or fill out an online form today! We can’t wait to meet you!

What to Do and What Not to Do After Your Laser Resurfacing Treatment?

It is important to know what to expect whenever you are getting any type of skin treatment done. Skin that has been treated with laser resurfacing will be extra sensitive for a period of time. Most patients describe their skin feeling like they have a mild sunburn. Redness and swelling are normal but should be taken care of as to not cause any damage. Some patients also report experiencing some itching or stinging sensation for a couple of days following their procedure.

Laser resurfacing treatments are a great way to refresh your skin and address acne, wrinkles, large pores, and more. At Jupiter Dermatology our team works hard to help our patients get glowing skin. Patients should be aware of how to care for their skin when they get laser resurfacing treatment.

The Benefits of Laser Resurfacing

Now, more and more people are leaning towards the “less is more” makeup approach. This means that people are working harder at achieving a smooth, clear complexion. Topical, at-home skincare is a great way to take care of your skin and keep you looking beautiful, other methodologies are can enhance your complexion in ways your products can’t. Laser resurfacing is a comprehensive skincare approach that does wonders for your skin. It can:

  • Improve cellular turnover
  • Stimulate collagen production
  • Minimize pore size
  • Remove redness
  • Remove pigmentation
  • Even skin tone
  • Treat scarring
  • Treat acne
  • Provide smoother, glowing skin

It is no wonder that patients love this procedure as it can truly transform their skin.

Side Effects of Laser Resurfacing

The expected downtime from laser skin resurfacing treatment depends on the type and depth of the laser. Our team will go over the projected recovery time with you during a consultation. Redness, inflammation, and a tingling sensation are normal following this treatment. It may take up to four weeks for complete cell renewal, reduction of pigmentation, healing, and for the best results to show. Collagen renewal may take up to three months for noticeable results.

Steps to Follow After Your Laser Resurfacing Treatment

There are a few steps to follow to help keep your skin healthy and to get the best results, these are:

  • Clean the face one to two times a day with a skin solution as directed by your dermatologist.
  • Apply protective treatments that are recommended by your dermatologist to help your skin heal.
  • Use sunscreen to protect your skin
  • Use a moisturizer each day

Your dermatologist at Jupiter Dermatology will walk you through skincare steps to help your skin heal well and give you glowing results.
