Before and After Basal Cell Surgery with Mohs

Below you can see some more in-depth pictures of before and after skin cancer. This young woman in her 30’s came in for a check-up after having Mohs skin cancer surgery a month ago on her forehead. She had squamous cell carcinoma. In a previous video, we showed you Don’s testimonial for reconstructive surgery where he now advocates for the early prevention of skin cancer after his 11 Mohs surgeries. Although this patient’s surgery was much smaller with only six sutures, Dr. Mejia was able to spot another basal skin cancer on her nose that had previously gone unnoticed by other dermatologists, and subsequently removed it. As you can see in the before and after skin cancer pictures, she has no scarring.

Reconstructive Surgery After Mohs ~ A Patient Who Underwent 11 Surgeries

Don has had reconstructive surgery after Mohs skin cancer many times. He has been coming to Jupiter Dermatology for about three years. Like many sun worshippers in South Florida, he never used sunblock. He has had to have eleven surgeries to remove the skin cancer on his nose, forehead, right temple, ear, chest and legs. Most  were squamous cell skin cancer. Luckily, he didn’t have any melanomas which is the most advanced type of skin cancer. Moles: A Dysplastic Nevi Is Not A Cancerous Mole

A dysplastic nevi is an irregular mole. We all have many different types of moles in our body and many times dermatologists biopsy these moles that look a little bit abnormal and have a different shape or different configuration. Primarily we are looking for the rules of melanoma or the A, B, C, D’s:

Moles – Explanation & Live Biopsy

Moles sometimes appear out of the blue and in this case, this patient wanted to get it checked to make sure that it is not a cancerous mole. Dr. Mejia inspects the mole by using a dermatascope, a magnification device which allows for close up view of moles. After inspection, he sees that it is a cutaneous horn which is an overgrowth of skin but sometimes can be underlying skin cancer, pre-cancer or a wart. The treatment for this is to do a biopsy and remove it. Continue reading “Moles – Explanation & Live Biopsy”

Skin Cancer Treatment Options

The different skin cancer treatment options are:

  • Mohs surgery – see description below.
  • Radiation surgery involves going to the hospital on multiple visits to get radiation.
  • Scraping or burning called electrodessication, curettage depending on the location of the skin cancer. This option has a tendency of producing a round whitish scar as opposed to a cosmetic line scar.
  • Excision or removal of the skin cancer without Mohs surgery. With this option, there are wider margins, so there is a risk of leaving a larger scar and the potential risk of not getting it all out the first time and having to go back and repeat the procedure.
  • In some cases, you can use topical immunotherapy with a medication called Imiquimod, or Aldara

Levulon Pre-treatment Before PDT

Sarah, our Physician Assistant, demonstrates the application of Levulon. It is a skin cancer pre-treatment before undergoing Photodyanamic Therapy  (PDT).  The solution  comes in a vial and applied directly on the skin one hour before the blue light therapy.

Dr. Mejia Discusses The Skin Cancer Treatment

Our patient, Larry who recently spoke about his experience with , is at a follow up visit with Dr.  Mejia who is a reputable skin cancer surgeon in South Florida. He shows some images of the basal cell carcinoma before the surgery. In this case, the patient neglected to take care of it earlier and it grew larger as time passed. Luckily with the Mohs skin cancer procedure, all the roots of the basal cells are removed .

After the removal of the skin cancer, Dr. Mejia did a plastic surgery closure which involved a flap procedure. Cosmetically, the patient is very happy with the result since the scar is hardly noticable because of the reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Mejia’s recommendation: Wear your sunblock and if you see any spots that are not healing, seek dermatological help.

Mohs Surgery Testimonial

Our patient, Larry, shares his experience with a skin cancer treatment called Mohs Surgery. He was concerned not only for his health, but because he works as a sales manager who meets the public frequently.

In this video above you will see some pictures of  before and after the surgery and how well the scar healed. Thank you Larry for sharing this.

Reconstructive Surgery After Mohs

Mohs Skin Cancer Surgery

Dr. Mejia was doing a reconstructive surgery on a patient’s nose after the patient underwent Mohs skin cancer surgery. Dr. Mejia performs both procedures. This alleviates the patient from having to go seek another doctor to do plastic surgery after the Mohs. Not only does it save time and stress, it also is cost effective.
